In Budapest, some films play dubbed into Hungarian (szinkronizált), and some play in the original language with Hungarian subtitles. This site lists only the original-language screenings. This guide tells you which cinemas show English films, how to read the Hungarian labels, and how to find today's screenings.
The short answer
- Cinema City multiplexes: Allee, Aréna, Campona, Duna Pláza, Mammut and Westend.
- Art cinemas: Művész Mozi, Puskin Mozi, Toldi Mozi, Tabán Artmozi and Kino Cafe Mozi (the Artmozi network), plus Corvin Mozi.
- All of them on one page: English movies in Budapest lists every English-language screening at these cinemas, by date.
How to read the Hungarian labels
Cinema programmes in Budapest describe the language of each screening in Hungarian. These are the words to look for:
- eredeti nyelven means "in the original language". An English film with this label plays in English.
- magyar felirattal means "with Hungarian subtitles". The audio stays in the original language.
- angol felirattal means "with English subtitles". This is useful for films whose original language is not English.
- szinkron or szinkronizált means dubbed into Hungarian. Skip these.
- OV is short for "original version", the same thing as eredeti nyelven.
On an English film, eredeti nyelven, magyar felirattal means English audio with Hungarian subtitles at the bottom of the screen. You hear the original actors.
The multiplexes: Cinema City
We list six Cinema City cinemas in Budapest: Allee, Aréna, Campona, Duna Pláza, Mammut and Westend. The same film can play both dubbed and in the original version. Always check the label of the exact screening, not only the film.
Screenings come in different formats, such as 2D, 3D, IMAX, 4DX and VIP. Our listings show the format of each screening, so you can filter for the one you want.
The art cinemas
Művész Mozi, Puskin Mozi, Toldi Mozi, Tabán Artmozi and Kino Cafe Mozi belong to the Artmozi network (artmozi.hu). Corvin Mozi has its own programme at corvinmozi.hu.
Art cinemas show films from many countries. A subtitled screening there is not always an English film, so check that the original language is English. Our listings do this check for you and only show films in English.
Hungarian film titles
In Hungary, many films play under a Hungarian title, so a film you know can be hard to spot in a cinema's programme. Our listings show the English title next to the Hungarian one when we can find it, and an IMDb rating when one is available.
How to find today's English screenings
- Load English movies in Budapest.
- Pick a date. The listings start with today.
- Filter by cinema, format or source (cinemacity, artmozi or corvin).
- Tap a showtime to book on the cinema's own website.
We do not sell tickets. Prices and free seats are on the cinema's booking page.
Tips
- Check the language label on the booking page before you pay. The same film can play dubbed in one auditorium and in the original version in the next.
- The art cinemas and the multiplexes have separate programmes. If a film is not on at Cinema City in the original version, it can still be on at an art cinema.
